A review of this app is difficult because there are not many apps to compare it with. First of all this app has exclusive access to a large number of voice recordings and video footage not available to other apps. It also has access to PDF files which open on the app and not separately via Adobe. So the app is as good as what it has access to. With most apps many things could go wrong but I found no flaws with the workings of this app. It even allows for feedback in the event that the aforementioned files are themselves flawed.
With respect to the Japanese learning files themselves, which is the only language I am interested in this week, the recordings are good and in particular the voice recordings remind me of a magazine which is no longer available called Mangajin. These have a fair mix of different voice talent, foley background sounds, etc. The video footage is heavily weighted towards younger females as the primary talent, however they are good too. Language is a difficult enough thing to learn, being confined to a one hour per day classroom session at best. Often the teachers speak English and so do not fully immerse you. Extra listening is required.
It is often said that children learn their native language fast, but if you think of it, they dont spout off many elaborate sentences until after a full three years of constant listening from sunrise to sunset. Our hearing ability is often tuned to certain sounds neurologically and for an adult, it may indeed take time to listen, listen, and listen. My "boshi" is off to this companys efforts in bringing a new language to my ears.
My only criticism is to have more varied video talent, someone from Osaka, Kyushu, Ryukyu islands, Hokaido, etc. because I am told that there are accentual differences which my ear cannot hear, at least, not yet. I also have difficulty understanding the mumblings of older speakers. Men speak in a much lower register than cute Japanese girls making them difficult to understand too, especially when Anime, the usual source for extracurricular listening, is replete with co-gals and male parts talented by females disguising their voices.
I hope this review sheds some light on this app. If it is still free as it was when I got it, it is totally worth exploring.
